The Sari Soldiers, a documentary on six women affected by the Maoist insurgency, screened in the Capital

Jun 20, 2017-
The recent edition of Film Critics’ Society Nepal’s weekly Sunday Cinema forum featured the screening of the documentary film The Sari Soldiers.
Directed by Julie Bridgham, the film documents the Maoist insurgency, the ripples it sent through Nepal, and how it shaped Nepal’s modern history.
The documentary has as its subject six women who were affected by the insurgency in one way or the other—Devi Sunuwar, mother of Maina Sunuwar; Kamala Rhokha (aka Kranti), an ex-Maoist guerilla; Mandira Sharma, an award-winning human rights lawyer; Rajani, a Royal Nepal Army officer; and Ram Kumari Jhankri, a student politician.
After the screening, the event featured a discussion with Devi Sunuwar, who talked about her relentless pursuit of justice; Kamala Rhokha, who is now an MP; and Ramyata Limbu, co-producer of the documentary.
Speaking at the event, Sunuwar said, “The documentary moved me to the core. I had the chance to listen to the voices of my husband and other relatives, who are all deceased now. It also made me recall all the hardships I had to endure during my pursuit for justice, which still has a long way to go.” Sunuwar added, “Once, I was offered financial gifts to withdraw the case in court. But that is not my goal. I don’t want a cosy house in exchange of blood. I want justice.”
Ramyata Limbu, one of the producers of the film, talked about
the filming of the documentary over a three-year period. “At times the filming was extremely risky. Getting in touch with combatants and filming them was no easy feat,” Limbu said, adding, “The documentary, above all else, highlights the power of these six extraordinary women and their struggle.”
At the event, Rhokha remarked, “Although there is a lot left to be done econimically—politically, the voices of the women have been more or less addressed and are on way to be addressed,in the past decade.”
Sunday Cinema is organised every Sunday, by the Film Critics’ Society of Nepal, at the Union House in Anamnagar. The shows are open to public, and see a panel discussion after the screening.
