New theatre school in Pokhara

Jun 20, 2017-
It has been a norm among theatre enthusiasts from around the country to travel to Kathmandu to learn acting and other theatre-related courses, due to the lack of theatre houses and schools outside the Capital. Keeping this in mind, theatre artist Krishna Udasi has established a theatre school—National Art School—in Lekhnath, Pokhara.
The school, which is currently teaching 17 students, started its maiden session last week.
Speaking to the Post, director Udasi said, “Pokhara has its own unique place in Nepali theatre scene, but lately there have been only few theatre artists performing at the national level. One goal we have in mind is to ensure the participation of more actors from the west at the national level.”
According to Udasi, the school will provide four-month acting classes to start out with. He said, “We are initially planning to provide only acting classes but hope to expand in the future. The acting course will include three months of acting lessons and one month of a production course.” He added, “We will also have various meditation, yoga, martial art, music and dance workshops during this period.”
Udasi said that the school aims to produce 60 artists every year.
The institute will have Parikshya Lamichanne from Mandala Theatre as its chief instructor. Other instructors for the school include Sarita Giri, Krishna Udasi, Bikash Joshi, Komalanada Yoga, Ghansyam Pun and Dipak Godar.
